1. What's an e-mail alias?
An alias is an alternate name for an email address. It may also be known as (a.k.a.).
Aliases allow messages to be sent to multiple addresses, but messages end up in the same mailbox.
2. My e-mail program is prompting me for the username and password, but I am certain it is correct.
The most common mistake is that you are not entering the username correctly.
Make certain your settings match the examples below:
Incoming Mail Server : POP3
Incoming mail (POP3): pop.yourdomain.com
Outgoing mail (SMTP): smtp.yourdomain.com
Your username should be the whole email address (username@yourdomain.com).
Note: For Netscape Messenger users, it should be username$yourdomain.com.
If you have opted not to host your email with ArisHost, please contact

3. What do SMTP, POP, Mail Relay, Mail client and MX record stand for?
|
SMTP
|
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol is the standard e-mail protocol on the Internet. It is a TCP/IP
protocol that defines the message format and the message transfer agent (MTA), which stores
and forwards the mail. SMTP was originally designed for only ASCII text, but MIME and other
encodingSMTP servers route SMTP messages throughout the Internet to a mail server, such as
POP3 or IMAP4, which provides a message store for incoming mail.
|
|
POP
|
Post Office Protocol(POP) is a standard mail server commonly used on the Internet. It provides
a message store that holds incoming e-mail until users log on and download it. POP3 is
a simple system with little selectivity. All pending messages and attachments are downloaded
at the same time. POP3 uses the SMTP messaging protocol.

|
Mail Relay
|
The use of a mail server from a connection outside of the immediate network. Open Mail
Relays are the source of most originating junk e-mail.
|
|
MX Record
|
Mail Exchange Record. A DNS resource record type indicating which host
can handle electronic mail for a particular domain.
|
|
Mail client
|
An e-mail program that resides in the user's computer and has access to mail servers on
the network.
|
4. I am receiving a "TCP/IP socket error"
This usually means that your connection to the internet has dropped or is not responding.
You will need to disconnect and reconnect if you are using a modem. You may also need to reboot
your PC to reset your modem or network connection if it is not responding
5. What happens to e-mail sent to my -level domain
All mail sent to top-level domains can be forwarded using our Basic and Advanced e-mail forwarding
services.
6. I currently own a domain name, and want to use it for email purposes primarily. Do you offer this service?
Yes, you can take advantage of the FREE Email services we provide as part of our FREE
Web Hosting package. This basic FREE package includes 5 pop boxes, unlimited aliases, and
a "catch-all" box.
7. Why do you use open relay port 25, it is prone to spam emails.
We are using the anti-spam features of sendmail to block spam at the server level. Outgoing spam
through ArisHost's mailservers will never be an issue.
8. Can I handle my own mail? I want to point my mail exchange to another server, is that possible? Are there any additional fees?
Yes, it is possible for us to change the MX records of your DNS entry to allow your servers
to handle the mail. However, if we control your DNS for you, there is an additional fee ($10/year)
associated with being able to change your DNS. For more information, please email
support@arishost.com.
